Dean Smith. It is a name that is synonymous with leadership, winning, hard work, tradition and dedication. And while Coach Smith was not a SigEp (he was a Phi Gam from Kansas), he stood for many of our own SigEp philosophies including equal rights and responsibilities, continuous development, accountability and mentoring. As the coach of the men’s basketball team from 1961 through 1997, he crossed many of our paths. Maybe he was a special speaker at the house. Perhaps you met him personally through a fraternity brother. You and your brothers may have celebrated one of his national championships at the house. We said good-bye to this basketball legend last month.
